During the last ten years (2002-2011) the European fresh orange imports has grown by 9 per cent passing from 2 396 615 MT to 2 611 799MT. France has been the second largest orange importer in 2008 and the third largest orange importer in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The peak import year of the European Union has been the year 2004 with 3 037 729 MT of fresh ornages imported.

 

In 2010, France imported 70 per cent of its oranges from Spain (320 000 MT). South Africa supplied 11 per cent of the French orange imports (53 845 MT) while Tunisia supplied about 5 per cent of the French orange imports (22 596 MT). In 2010 France imported 3,3 per cent of its oranges from Morocco (15 274 MT) while Italy supplied only 2,5 per cent of the French orange imports ( 11 888 MT). Among the other suppliers of France we can mention Argentina, Netherlands, Egypt, Portugal, Uruguay, Colombia, Cuba and Turkey. France imported 410 525 MT of oranges in 2011 (mostly Spanish, South African, Tunisian and Moroccan oranges). By the first of June 2012, French orange imports reached already 263 992 MT (219 755 MT of Spanish oranges, 16 740 MT of Tunisian oranges, 6 618 MT of Italian oranges, 6 061 MT of Moroccan and 4 936 MT of Portuguese oranges).  

 

In 2012, the EU countries imported 2 803 699 MT of oranges. France and Germany have been the largest orange importer countries ( France: 465 831 MT and Germany: 470 800 MT ).

 

By the 1st of June 2013, France had already imported 290 379 MT of fresh oranges, mostly from Spain (238 092 MT), Italy (7 382 MT), Portugal (5 068 MT) and Morocco (4 839 MT).

The world's and Europe's largest orange exporter is Spain, who is also the first supplier of France. While, in 2010, Spain exported 1 356 368 MT of oranges Italy exported 179 992 MT of oranges. In 2011 Spain exported 1 532 657 MT of oranges and Italy exported 137 755 MT. Compared to Spain, Netherlands, Turkey, Greece ( 514 694 MT exported in 2011 ) and  Morocco, France re-exports small amounts of oranges, mostly to the EU countries.
 
By the 1st of June 2013, France had already exported  17 635 MT of oranges mostly to Switzerland, Norway and Belgium).
