While  the European Union's total apple imports decreased by 5,8 per cent during the last ten years, French apple imports nearly doubled in volume from 2000 to 2010 (up by 98 %).
 

France imported 84 102 MT of apples in 2000. In 2010 the French apple imports reached 166 458 MT (+ 98 %) while the EU imports for the same period were steady ( 2 595 800 MT in 2001 and 2 585 483 MT in 2010 ). Globally French apple imports have risen by 98 per cent during the past ten years ( 2000 to 2010 ) while the French apple exports decreased by 17,7 per cent during the same period.

 

France has also been the world's largest apple exporter till the year 2004. Starting from 2005 the largest exporters became China and Italy. France is also among the three biggest EU apple producers.

 

By the 1st of August 2012 France imported (January to July) 94 532 MT of apples , mostly from Belgium (18 784 MT), Italy (14 035 MT), Spain (11 586 MT), Netherlands (11 465 MT), Chile (11 112 MT), Brazil (6 208 MT), South Africa (4 134 MT), Chile (5 049 MT) and Argentina (2 548 MT).

 

By the end of the year 2012 France imported 201 040 MT of apples ( up by 45 per cent compared to 2011).

 

 

From January till the 1st of June 2013, France imported a total of  114 449 tons of apples mostly from Belgium ( 19 652 MT ), Italy ( 17 018 MT ), Poland (  16 717 MT ),   Spain ( 11 416 MT ), Chile ( 9 432 MT ), Netherlands ( 9 138 MT ), Germany ( 4 110 MT ), South Africa ( 3 864 MT ), Argentina ( 3 755 MT ) and  Brazil ( 3 495 MT ).

 

By the end of 2013 the French apple imports reached a volume of  248 827 MT while during the same period the country exported a total volume of 525 415 MT of apples. The leading apple suppliers of France have been Spain ( 40 162 MT ), Belgium ( 36 637 MT), Italy ( 28 901 MT ), Poland ( 28 849 MT ), Netherlands (23 682 MT), Chile ( 26 249), South Africa ( 10 528 MT), Brasil ( 7 685 MT), Germany ( 7 143 MT ), Argentina ( 5 923 MT ), and New Zealand ( 5 835 MT)  

 

During the first five months of 2014 ( January till the 1st of June 2014) the French apple imports reached 51 281 MT while the the export volume reached 345 117 MT .
